Here’s a watercolour painting of a scenic view of Mount Koya, which is the spiritual headquarters of Shingon Buddhism in Japan. The mountain is chock full of temples and shrines, and has a cemetery which houses the remains of the founder of Shingon Buddhism, Kobo Daishi. The cemetery was a beautiful one, might I add, and has an air of spirituality when you stroll through it. I didn’t choose to visit Mount Koya for religious purposes. We were there more for the scenery, fresh air, temples and the overnight stay in a temple lodging, which was a great experience! Imagine waking up to a glorious sunrise over the misty mountain-tops, all visible from your own balcony. And the room was furnished in traditional Japanese style… truly memorable. Out of the places we visited in Japan, Mount Koya is one of my favourites. This painting was done from a photograph I took. Done in July 2007.
